Bordeaux vs Burgundy

I am not sure I had been to the Bentley Hotel before, but it provided an excellent setting for our corporate wine tasting evening last week - somehow stately and informal at the same time.

We kicked off with a wine tasting while comfortably seated in the bar area, and I explained the fundamental differences between Bordeaux and Burgundy, red and white.  We then had an excellent meal, accompanied by a couple of wines with each course, again highlighting stylistic differences and how they express themselves as wines age.

The group was very relaxed and I think we struck the right balance between wine learning, seasonal banter and good humour.

The Latest from the Medoc
As 2009 comes to a close, Directors of SmoothRed enjoy an autumn wine tasting at some of the famous Médoc estates to see at first hand some of the recent vintages.

The wine tasting starts by a visit at Brane Cantenac where we tasted several vintages including the outstanding 03, 05 and 07, all of which were very well received. By chance when we arrived the cellar master was in the process of fining using egg whites as can be shown in the photograph.  Following the morning wine tasting we visited Leoville Barton where we  were  offered several different vintages from Leoville Barton and their neighboring chateau, Langoa Barton.

This was another great Bordeaux wine tour that allowed us to visit the communes of St Julien and Margaux.

Another classic vintage from SmoothRed:
Last week was another SmoothRed wine tour to the famous Medoc Vineyards.  Our clients enjoyed a wonderful wine tasting experience as they visited the Château Lynch-Bages estate in Pauillac on the left bank in the Medoc. The estate is an 1855 classified Fifth Growth and today the majority of production is Pauillac Grand Cru Classé. In the afternoon they travelled south down the famous ‘route du chateaux’ for a wine tasting at Chateau Giscours. Giscours has always had the potential to be one of Margaux's greats, but it was not until 2000 that this property really started to deliver. If you are wine tasting in France Margaux is always a must see destination!
With luxury chateau accommodation, good French cuisine coupled with some superb Grand Cru visits the wine tasting experience was a great success.

“We had an absolutely fabulous time, couldn’t have asked for more.  The châteaux accommodation was perfect, the drivers were brilliant and the staff and the food were all wonderful. We both congratulate you in organizing such a perfect event. Thank you very much”

Kind regards, Amanda Wilson - Bordeaux Wine Weekend November 2009
